SUMMARY:Surgery #1 @ KUBE
DTEND:20261205T201500Z
DESCRIPTION:Zen1 @ KU.BE\, Frederiksberg || 05.12.2026 || kl.20 (doors open
at kl.19.30)\nThe first in our series of concerts that examines the conce
rt format from a scientific perspective\, with pieces that engage with aco
ustic phenomena\, the body and surgical precision.\nAt the core of the pro
gramme is Ragnhild May’s new work ‘differences’ commissioned by Ear
Transplant. This piece features custom-made sculptural instruments that ar
e built to create difference tones: extra notes that our ears perceive whe
n two or more notes are played together\, even though they are not actuall
y being produced by the instruments. \nShe writes: ‘I see difference ton
es as an example of what could be called a prosthetic entanglement between
body and instrument. I use this concept of relating the body to objects a
s a way of thinking of other situations where entanglements can occur. For
a short time the body is the instrument\, a ghost tone sings from the ear
s and the usual logic is tilted. A way of listening that points towards an
other understanding of relations between objects and bodies than how subje
ct-object relations are usually defined. The relation points towards anoth
er way of experiencing sound\, a relationality to the instrument. The conc
ept of the cyborg\, introduced by Donna Haraway\, highlights the interconn
ection of technology and the body\, challenging traditional notions of the
body as a fixed and natural entity. Karen Barad's concept of entanglement
emphasizes the interrelatedness of different entities\, including the bod
y and technology.’Complementing this new work is Cathy Van Eck’s ‘Mu
sic Stands’\, which reveals the sonic possibilities of an object that is
usually seen as a purely practical vessel\, rather than one capable of ar
tistic expression.\nIn 'Axis Spirat' by Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir\, 4 mu
sicians surround a moving-head light fixture that mercurially casts illumi
nated shards across the space. Long tones interweave with surgical precisi
on\, in counterpoint with the light in a ritualistic and focussed performa
nce. \nThe evening is completed by a semi-improvised work devised by Ear T
ransplant's 4 core members: Matthew Grouse (e-guitar)\, Joss Smith (clarin
ets) Jónas Ásgeir Ásgeirsson (accordion)\, and Irene Bianco (percussion
